Born in Tiflis/Georgia, the mezzo-soprano completed her studies with excellent results and success as well as completing her studies in French and Spanish at the High School for foreign languages, graduating with the "Magister" Diploma.
She continued her studies, majoring in solo-voice, Lied and Opera at the Music academy in Tiflis (Diploma with honour) as well as at the Vienna Conservatory.
Her first professional engagement in 1998 led her straight to the Vienna State Opera. She has remained a member of the company there until June 2006. While she started there mostly with supporting roles she quickly advanced to important and even leading roles like Rosina in Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia", Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni", Despina in "Così fan tutte", Marcellina (with both Riccardo Muti and Seiji Ozawa, including the often cut aria), Pierotto in Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix", Bersi in Giordano's "Andrea Chénier", Meg Page in Verdi's "Falstaff", Antigone in Enescu's "Oedipe" and Stéphano in Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette". At the Vienna Volksoper she could be heard in the title role of Bizet's "Carmen".
Besides her engagement in Vienna she also appeared at various other opera theatres for guest performances: as Charlotte in Massenet's "Werther" in a new production in Graz, as Giovanna Seymour in Donizetti's "Anna Bolena" in Ulm, in Wagner's "Die Walküre" in Zurich, in Korngold's "Die tote Stadt" for her debut at the Salzburg Festival, as Pierotto in "Linda di Chamounix" and Marcellina in Tokyo, and as Isabella in Rossini's "L'italiana in Algeri" for a new production in Klagenfurt and also for the Klosterneuburg Festival. In August 2005 she sang Clitemnestra in the first modern performance of Ignatz Pleyel's "Ifigenia in Aulide" for the Pleyel Festival. A studio recording of this production has been released on CD.
During the season 2005/2004 she could be heard in the title role in "Carmen" in Hamburg, sang Rosina, Despina and Marcellina for the Vienna State Opera, gave her role debut as Giulietta in "Les contes d'Hoffmann", sang Mozart's Requiem in St Petersburg and participated within a concert performance of Dukas' "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue" at the Vienna Konzerthaus and a CD recording of the opera conducted by Bertrand de Billy.
In the season 2006/2007 she appeared at the Frankfurt Opera as Sesto in Mozart’s "La clemenza di Tito", the title role of Rossini’s "La Cenerentola", Nerone in Handel's "Agrippina", Polina in "Pikovaya Dama" and as Medea in a new production of Cavalli’s "Giasone" Furthermore she sang song and aria recitals in Palma de Mallorca and Frankfurt and several operatic concerts in Germany.
The season 2007/2008 began with her role debut as Cherubino ("Le nozze di Figaro") at the Frankfurt Opera. In October 2007 she sang Isabella in Italiana in Algeri at the Aalto Theatre Essen. Furthermore she can be heard at the Frankfurt Opera as Fenena ("Nabucco"), Sélysette ("Ariane et Barbe-Bleue") Melibea ("Il viaggio a Reims") and Adalgisa ("Norma"). At the Theater an der Wien in Vienna she will be interpreting Varvara in Janácek's Kát’a Kabanová and in Lisbon she will be singing Neris in concert performances of Cherubini’s "Médée". A CD recording of Giordano's "Andrea Chénier" with Stella Grigorian as Bersi, Violeta Urmana, Andrea Bocelli and Carlos Alvarez will be released soon.
